Who We Are

One Truckee River (OTR) is a nonprofit that manages a coalition of public and private partners working together towards our mission: to ensure a healthy and thriving river connected to its community. Our Partnership Council includes 42 representatives from 32 local agencies and nonprofits collaborating to improve water quality, create a thriving environment, conduct education and outreach, and facilitate long-term management of the Truckee River, as guided by our Management Plan.

The One Truckee River staff and Board of Directors focus on sparking partner collaboration and supporting fundraising for project implementation. As the majority of the Truckee River and its corridor are managed and regulated by federal, state, and local agencies, One Truckee River supports and assists these organizations in implementing watershed management initiatives and working towards our shared goals.

Truckee River Foundation is a 501 (c) 3 nonprofit doing business as One Truckee River.

OTR Mission & Vision

Our mission is to ensure a healthy, thriving, sustainable river connected to the hearts and minds of its community.

Our vision is to be a collaboration of public and private partners working together to realize a Truckee River that flows clear and clean; quenches our thirst; sustains the river’s natural ecology, cultural resources and wildlife; and connects residents and visitors to unparalleled opportunities for recreation and regeneration.

Short History of OTR

From 2013 to 2015, the Nevada Land Trust and Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, with Truckee River Fund, Western Regional Water Commission, and National Park Service support, brought together over 130 local stakeholders to discuss challenges and opportunities along the River. Over the course of many collaborative, in-depth meetings, retreats, and forums, they developed the One Truckee River Management Plan, Phase I. The One Truckee River Management Plan recommends actions to create a sustainable, clean, and thriving river and inspire a community that recognizes the river in their hearts and minds.

In 2016, the One Truckee River Management Plan was unanimously adopted by Washoe County, City of Reno, City of Sparks, and the Western Regional Water Commission. Then, the implementation work began. In 2017, the One Truckee River Partnership Council determined nine action items as having the highest priority. To date, four of those nine priority action items have been completed.

In 2020, with similar missions, the Truckee River Foundation and One Truckee River joined forces to implement the One Truckee River Management Plan.

The OTR Management Plan

The OTR Management Plan consists of these four main goals:

Goal 1: Ensure and protect water quality and ecosystem health in the Truckee River.

Goal 2: Create and sustain a safe, beautiful and accessible river connecting people and places.

Goal 3: Build an aware and engaged community that protects and cares for the river.

Goal 4: Ensure the measurable, sustainable and collaborative management of the river for today and into the future.

103 specific action items are identified in the OTR Management Plan to protect and connect the community to the Truckee River.
